There is a scene in the movie “Kingdom of Heaven” with Orlando Bloom that I am remembering in this moment. It is the scene where he is rallying the remaining men of Jerusalem to stand against the Muslem armies that have come to invade it. Calling out in a courageous voice (which can only be so courageous coming from Orlando Bloom) he informs the men that “the king is dead, and it has fallen to us to defend Jerusalem.”
I’m also thinking of the age-old Shakespeare quote: “some are born great, some achieve greatness, while others have greatness thrust upon them.”
What happens when a person finds themselves in a place where they feel they do not belong, with a platform they did not earn, carrying responsibilities they don’t have the maturity to carry, and a persona they never asked for? We’d all hope they would rise to the occasion, but that remains to be seen.
The truth is, greatness is a choice, and position means nothing. But position carries weight only when she who holds that position has a character that can sustain her further than her talent.
Opportunity is dangerous… but its the only path to progress. I think I’ll risk it every time for the sake of progress. Maybe I will fail, maybe I can’t lead, maybe I’m not the person everyone thought I was.
Its interesting, that moment, where you get what you want…what you’ve desired for a long time, only to realize that maybe you underestimated the gravity of that thing you wanted, and when you get it, you start to think to yourself, ‘maybe I should’ve been a bit more patient…” Nevertheless, what choice do you have but to keep moving forward, and to keep dreaming yourself into eternity?
It has fallen to us to defend Jerusalem.
